
(Greek. βαση-base) the foot, the lower supporting part of the column, half-column, pilasters, pylon, anta, etc. It consists of a plinth, shafts, and scots. It has a complex silhouette, which (as required by the laws of tectonics) is always wider at the bottom than at the top (see also podium, pedestal, crepidoma, pyrgos, plinth, torus, trochilus, stereo-bat, stylobate).
